Jean Nouvel's Design Philosophy

Project type

Cultural Analysis & Visual Communication

Date

Spring 2024

Location

Barcelona, Spain

As part of a course I took while studying abroad in Barcelona, I explored the life and work of French architect Jean Nouvel, analyzing his impact on global architecture and how he merges function, form, and cultural narrative.

My final presentation focused on the connection between architecture and identity, using case studies of Nouvel’s most iconic works—including Torre Glòries in Barcelona, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the Arab World Institute in Paris. I studied how Nouvel’s designs reflect local culture, history, and environment, and how he redefines modernism through symbolism, contrast, and fearlessness.

This was a project totally outside my typical marketing/brand focus, but it challenged me to approach creativity from a new angle—through space, structure, and intention. It also deepened my understanding of how culture and context shape design in every industry.
